La Thuile
A
former mining village, La Thuile is a mix of old and new. The
modern Planibel complex is located adjacent to the nursery slopes and
main lift system, with a number of small family run hotels
surrounding. With a host of small restaurants and bars, there
is a strong sense of community and always a warm welcome. The
main attraction has to be the quietness of the resort. With a
fast modern lift system, but limited accommodation, there are virtually no lift queues. and the pistes
are very quiet. It is a regular occurrence to have a complete
piste to yourself. It is this quietness on the piste which makes
La Thuile a comparatively safe resort and confidence is built quickly
away from other skiers. The
slopes vary widely and are ideal for beginners to experts. There
is a nursery slope in the village with two lifts, and another nursery
area at the mid station. There are several gentle slopes above
the mid-station ideal for finding those ski legs again. At
the expert level, there are several long challenging runs reaching down to
the village as well as fantastic off-piste opportunities. Due
to the lack of people, fresh powder can regularly be found several days after
new snowfall. In winter there is no through traffic and the
main road adjacent to the nursery slopes is pedestrianised during the
day. The
resort has not yet succumbed to the ridiculous prices charged by many
other alpine villages and offers excellent value for money both in the
village and on the mountain. Evenings
are largely about exploring a surprisingly large variety of excellent food in
friendly surroundings enjoying the local wine in the 15 separate
restaurants. The Aosta Valley La
Torette is a superb red wine from €10 a bottle. In
the Brasserie du Bathieu you can enjoy an excellent evening
meal with wine for around €15 per head. Try the superb fillet steak,
'filetto'. The
popular Pepita Cafe serves tex-mex, buffalo steak and traditional Pizza. Other
excellent restaurants serving a variety of food include local trout
and giant prawns at Le Rascard, superb steak at 'the steak
house' - Maison De
Laurent and La Bricole, and a large variety of freshly baked Pizza
downstairs below the Coppa Pan After
a hearty meal, you can relax in a number of bars. You are always
assured of a warm welcome from Marco and Mike in the tiny Bricolette. For
a more lively evening try La Bricole, La Cage aux Folles, the Kings
bar and the Fantasia nightclub in the
Planibel complex. |
